"You can use technology to get 75% of my knowledge" — inside an elite family law firm

Steven Mindel, founder of FMBK, talks with Aparti CEO Igor Sheremet about what separates an elite family law firm, how the incoming talent has changed, and where technology helps without replacing judgment.

With Steven A. Mindel

Steven Mindel founded FMBK in 1990. The firm has grown into one of the largest family law practices in Los Angeles, with more than 20 attorneys across West LA, Pasadena, and Calabasas. Mindel is a Certified Family Law Specialist and the 2025–26 President of the Southern California Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

Igor Sheremet, CEO of Aparti, sat down with him at the AAML National Family Law Conference in Las Vegas to ask what separates an elite family law firm today, how the talent entering the field has changed, and where technology genuinely helps a practice without getting in the way of judgment.

Where Technology Fits

Nowadays you can use technology to get 75% of my knowledge and my judgment just by using technology properly. It gets you up to speed quicker, more efficiently, and makes you competitive with — let's just face it — older, more seasoned lawyers that have better judgment.
